Zimelt 5, which contains the active ingredient Melatonin, is an orally dissolving strip manufactured by Oral Thin Film (OTF) technology that has been emerged as a new concept in innovative drug delivery system to all patient groups. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the Pineal gland in the brain. It is responsible for regulating sleep-wake cycle and its production and release is increasing with darkness and decreasing with light.
The main function of Melatonin is to monitor circadian rhythm, that regulates body temperature, feeding, motor activities, sleep and fatigue. In addition to its role as a chronobiotic agent , it is directly involved in cellular protection and has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing, immunostimulant, metabolic regulatory properties. OTF is flexible and non-brittle strip that is placed on the tongue before passing into the gastrointestinal tract, aiming for a quick dissolution in the saliva.
